Cooking Rice

Saturday, February 10th, 2007

My baby loves rice and it’s a healthy part of his diet so I had to learn how to cook it. Cooking rice is so easy I can never mess up. I usually like feeding him brown rice but lately he prefers white. Here are some easy steps or at least this is how my mom does it:

  1. Wash 3 cups of basmati rice with cold water until water comes out clear.
  2. Soak rice in water, add one tbs salt in it, leave for 30 min.
  3. Drain out the water and pour some water in the pot then add the rice to it, the more water the merrier. You can also add a pinch of salt according to taste. Once it boils, see if you can break the rice into two. If you can, then remove from stove.
  4. Run the rice under cold tap water and drain very well.
  5. Add some oil in the same pot and put the rice back in the pot.
  6. Rice will be cooked in about 30 min to an hour, the longer the better but make sure it’s on a very low heat.
  7. For colour and flavour you can add saffran on top or a 1/4 cup rose water mixed with saffran, pour it all over.
  8. The result, edible rice.

Cravings

I’m craving a cheese sandwich with lettuce and goat cheese.

Chocolates & more

Saturday, January 13th, 2007

My co-worker was talking about this place and she really recommended I try their Noisetta drop and I got all excited I wanted to try them out too. I’m going to call them up in a wee while to check if they deliver.

Awtar

Monday, November 27th, 2006

I’ve always wanted to try Awtar’s food because my uncle recommended I try their breakfast but I’m not a morning person so instead I insisted on trying their food for dinner. I ordered grilled chicken and Rami had the mixed grills. We had lentil soup, Fatoosh, Taboulah and ‘Humous Beiruti’ for starters but I didn’t like the fact that they came in small portions. Nevertheless, it was so tasty. The food arrived on time and fresh from the oven.

I wish there were other restaurants out there with such excellent delivery service. I wish I had taken a picture to prove it.

Not only that Chika thinks it’s cool too.

Gone too far

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

I went to Asda the other day and I’ve found so many organic products that I really thought they’ve gone too far with this business, not that I don’t like organic goods, actually I love them but this is just too much for me. I saw organic baby food, baby formula, juice, mini raisins, baby snacks, baby biscuits, you name it! But it’s double the price of non-organic food, absurd?

Homemade Bread

Wednesday, June 7th, 2006

This is just another post about baby food. It’s the only topic I really enjoy posting about. So anyways I got back home as usual quite tired but I felt like baking 100% homemade bread for my baby. I haven’t introduced bread yet and my baby’s 10 months now, I thought this should be the best time to introduce whole wheat to his diet, in other words brown bread. I got the secret ingredients (using baby formula) ready and I tried my best at kneading the dough, it was tricky but I used my hands first to mix the whole thing, then I rolled it out with a wooden roller. I kept doing that for 5-7 minutes. Once I was done, I left the dough to rise for 30 mins and it was ready. I shaped it the way I wanted and baked it only for 5 minutes on a high temperature. Then I left them to cool down, put them in a sealed plastic bag and into the freezer.

My hands were so messy I couldn’t take a picture of the whole process. But I liked the results.

More Organic Foods

Tuesday, June 6th, 2006

I was just about to give up on this whole organic diet business when somehow I stumbled upon something that changed my mind. So I’ve bought my baby more organic foods like eggs and pasta. I feel more relaxed now knowing I’m feeding my baby some healthy food.
