Finding Nurseries

I didn’t know we had so many nurseries in Kuwait until I started looking for one. Many are homes turned into nurseries. You’ll be happy to know you’ll never get lost on your mission to finding the right nursery for your kid. We didn’t even make a list of nurseries or plan anything, we just drove about and found so many nursery ads on our way, only problem they were all in Arabic. So anyways all we had to do is find one of those ads, call them up for their address and head there.

We didn’t wake up early as planned but I thought we still had a shot as we left home at 1 pm. Some were super fancy and some were just dull which all made our choice a very tough one and because I’ll be the one dropping and picking up Hassan I needed a nursery that fits with my working schedule.

First place we checked out was Little Steps in Mishref. I didn’t like it at all, too many steps in wrong places and bulky corners meaning a guaranteed injury. No meals included and we’d have to pay around 90-110kd per month. I didn’t think the place looked like a nursery at all.

So we left quickly to check another nursery in the same area called Al-Burooj and boy what a very warm welcome we were greeted upon our arrival. It scared me how friendly everyone was yet I didn’t feel the place was right for Hassan even though everything looked amazing inside out and the prices were quite reasonable, still I had my doubts. I wish I took pictures of the place.

Next we headed to Taiba nursery and all I can say I would rather keep my son at home than taking him to this nursery. It looked miserable, at least they were not rip offs like Little Steps and only charged a fee of 60KD per month, meals not included.

After that we got out of Mishref and headed to South Surra where we found another nursery called British International, it was closed at 2 pm sharp, not so convenient with my working times but the security guy said that they’ll be open tomorrow, so we thought we’ll pass by the next day. (We did go there next day and it was okay compared to the others, though I thought their prices were a little over the top).

As we left in search for some other nursery ads on the steets we randomly found one called Universal Cambridge, asked for their address and off we went. I liked the overall look but I hated how they had a flight of steps going up to the play room. I felt so uncomfortable with the thought of kids running up and down those steps, there’s a huge chance that the kids may fall and get seriously hurt. They had an indoor pool which I thought was too deep for two yr olds too. It was out of question not a nursery I want to enroll my toddler in.

At that point I was ready to give up hope. I still had one nursery I liked very much which I checked out with a friend a while back called Marafie nursery in Salmiya, what I liked about them is how flexible they were with everything, I didn’t have any restrictions of payment whatsoever, and they offered healthy meals. They open from 6am-8pm which is perfect if I was a bit late. Nothing I saw today was as impressive as them. Next day I convinced Rami we’d go check it out together, thank God we did because as we were standing at the counter the power went off and I couldn’t bear the heat, neither could Hasson.

The last nursery we checked out was The English Playgroup in Salwa and I have to admit this is how a nursery should look like, turns out they do offer meals for toddlers only, only thing that bothered me was they start at 7:30am and end at 12:45pm, which meant I’ll have an obvious problem with dropping him off and picking him up. I didn’t like their payment plan because it’s not based on monthly payments but yearly and a down payment of 400 KD. It’s not appropriate when it comes to fussy toddlers but worth it looks wise I guess.

In the end I haven’t settled on any of them, I’d like to look around some more before I make my final decision but I like The English Playgroup the most and I’m ready to sacrifice a little of my time too if I had to.

Note: all of the nurseries above were bilingual nurseries.

Little Steps (Mishref) costs 90-110 KD per month with the uniform and meals are not included, I don’t advise anybody to take their kids there unless you don’t care whether they learn anything or not, tel: 5375372 or 7117317

Al-Burooj (Mishref) costs 75 KD monthly (special offer), very fancy place but meals are not included, if I didn’t have other options I would take my kid there because of their friendly staff, tel: 5386404 or 7373522

Marafie (Salmiya) costs 85 KD monthly, very flexible with everything, even if you take your kid for one hour or a whole day, it doesn’t matter with them, no restrictions at all, tel: 5613385-5628220-6355349

Taiba (Mishref) costs 6o KD per month, please don’t take your kid to this nursery because there’s nothing there for them, tables with no chairs not even cushions to sit on, tel: 6816134

British International (South Surra) costs 100 KD per month, plus 65 KD open file charges tel: 5030612

Universal Cambridge (South Surra, AlZahra) costs 75 KD per month, and  yearly 700 KD, cool place only thing I disliked were the stairs, tel: 7228489

The English Playgroup (Salwa) costs 75 KD with a 400 KD down payment, tel: 5652457

Nice! I think you were too fast to judge Marafiee Nursary.
They can give you a discount with there price.

  2. chikapappi Says:

Hmm… I dunno about nurseries bas why don’t you try Montessori in Salwa, it is expensive though – not as flashy as English Playroup but Hassoun would be speaking English o French later on :)

  3. pearls Says:

Ali, it’s not the discount that I’m looking for but it’s rather a place I know that they’ll take good care of my kid in my absence.

Chika, he needs to be potty trained for that nursery (http://www.gulfmontessori.com/procedures.htm)

  4. Me Says:

You should try Twinkle Star nursery in Egaila. It is a new nursery just opened a couple of months ago. My son goes there and he loves it! Its worth a visit.
Twinkle Star Nursery: Egaila. Tel: 7801611

  5. dad Says:

Actually what matters I think are:
    1. How clean to reduce risk of infection and convenience of the place. The closer to your work the better option.
    2. Staff friendly or not.
    3. How easy whether you or they can call if needed.
    4. if the baby sleepy..do they have place for babies to sleep. Is it clean.
    5. How many babies are registered, the fewer the better care i think.
    6. Finally, Check with your working place if they have such thing. i thought some working places offer a sort of nursery..not sure.

Mabrook Holy month Ramadan, take care and see you soon Inshallah.

  6. eshda3wa Says:

i went to the english playgroup twenty or so years ago, i remeber very few things about it, but my mom says i had the time of my life
years later we took my little sister and a few years after that my cousins attended
i dont know what their status is now, but we all agreed that they deteriorated over the years, but i do hope they got their act together in the 10 years we havnt been :)

if your not 100percent satisfied with any of them then look around some more.. fee waayd nursuries around

  7. NoNoWa Says:

Of all the nurseries u checked I can give u an idea of some—–

Marafie in Salmiya-NO. Very rude staff and location is bad. Just about anyone can get accepted there.

English Playgroup- NO. Looks good but classes are too big and there is no focus on the children.

Taiba- NO! If there are no supplies and no children orientated things around- bad sign!!! Maybe it was opened for pure money making purposes and not for the childrens sake…..

British International- NO! Very unqualified staff.

Little Steps- NO! Dont even get me started…….. its like British International.

Al-Burooj- CONSIDER IT! Not to bad- but dont think about the meals because sometimes he might not like the food, and then he wont eat at all. Bloomingdales in Dasma offer meals to kids and there menu is kid orientated!! i can get u the number…..

  8. Rawan Says:

I registered my son (2.5 years old) at Bloomingdales more than two months ago…and he STILL cries every single morning! A very bad case of separation anxiety.

At first, he cried the whole time he was there ( which were 2 hours the first week) ,but later on when he started staying for the whole day, he cries in the morning but stops later on.

The staff are nice…his teacher has been very patient with him, which is reassuring to me. But..the school has a strict policy of not letting you enter any of the classrooms during school hours. Parents are only allowed access to the reception area.

I tried talking to him, explaining how fun school can be, I even tried a reward for when he stops crying, etc..but nothing works :(

    Any suggestions?

  9. Pearls Says:

Rawan, my son cries every morning and when I tell him: “it’s time for school” he replies: “mabeee.”

  10. sarah Says:

    thanks for the information,
I am currently in USA and planning to go back to kuwait in Dec.
I have a 2 year old who has been going to daycare in USA since she was 3 months old, and she still cries in the mornings (does not want to enter the school) but when its time to pick her up she cries and shoves me because she does not want to leave school!

I have a question, does anyone now if nurseries accept students in Dec/jan? or must i have registered in Sept?

  11. Pearls Says:

It really depends on the nursery some accept kids all year round while others don’t so you’ll have to check with them first. I’m sure there are exceptions.

  12. Rawan Says:

Pearls, I think “mabee” is heard every single morning, in every kuwaiti home with a toddler!!

Today, the nursey took him to the Circus in Shaab park..he was very happy at the end of the day. He even turned around in the car to say “this is MY school”. You have no idea how happy I felt…that is until he said “mama..I cried in the bus” !!!

  13. chocolatesky Says:

where in salmiya is marafie? can i please get directions on how to go there (i’m very near sultan center in salmiya). my son goes to happy chappies in fintas. It’s a really good school and my son and i like it very much. the only problem is the location (fintas), very far from where we live and they only have classes until the kids are 4years old and then you have to transfer them to another school.

  14. Pearls Says:

choco, give them a call on: 5613385-5628220-6355349. Good luck

  15. Rehab Says:

    Pearls,

Thanks for the information about nurseries. I am new in Kuwait and about to start a new job. I also heard about marafie nursery from some friends. But, my son is 14 months old. Do you think they are capable of handling this young age? what other nurseries for young ages?

  16. Zee Says:

    Hello there
I have been reading your posts on Nurseries and I have been trying to call the Universal Cambridge on 7228489 but its not working, did you ever have another number for them??

  17. Rahila Says:

check out ‘baby of mine childcare’ in Mangaf. That lady just started this year and she takes only restricted number of kids, which I liked best. Also my 2.5 year old needs education with activity, and not only education. Call ‘em, hope u wont be dissappointed. Baby Of Mine – 7005485

  18. Pearls Says:

Zee, I don’t have another number. Try 101, they might have their new number or wait until registration opens (around now and next month) and they’ll have signs all over the place. If you’re so desperate go around south surra, you’ll definitely find a nursery every 100 metres you take. I saw a huge nursery sign in bayan yesterday. I didn’t get the name of the nursery though. I should check it out sometime. I’m guessing it’s marafie nursery but I’m not a fan of them.

Rahila, I’ve already found another nursery closer to home. Mangaf is a bit too far for us but I might consider it if they had Arabic.

  19. raih Says:

can i have the phone for happy land fun school

  20. sali Says:

Hi, my name is sali and I have a daughter almost 2 years (she was born 31 August), I had her enrolled at flex nursery close to my work, but the crazy management kicked my girls teacher due to the number of student decreased in the month of June, they didn’t care that the kids got used to the teachers around them and now she is only playing with the child minders (Pilipino staff),
if possible I need your advice, or direction on what’s best, I work in Kuwait city Sharq area, I finish work 2:30 I could ditch work earlier by 10 or 15 min to pick up my girl, the question do u know any nurseries located in Kuwait city, or another option could be: I live in Salwa Area, (rush hour is the same time) therefore I would arrive between 2:30-3:00, and I just called play group the told me that maximum she could stay till 2:00 please revert back if your can

  21. Pearls Says:

    raih, Happyland Funskool tel: 5624956

Sali, there’s not much you can do about it because most kids are on vacation and not many enroll in the summer, same applies to my son’s nursery. Many of the kids are off on their summer vacation. That’s why I’ve decided not enroll my son for the summer. I don’t know of many nurseries that are open at 2-3pm other than Marafie and I don’t recommend them.

I don’t see why you should change her nursery esp if she likes it there, unless you feel she hates it then you better find her another place. If she doesn’t complain just leave her there. Remember kids need to feel safe. If you move her from one nursery to another she might feel scared or abandoned.

Please let me know more about Flex nursery, their number and location, thanks.

  22. rabih Says:

    Thanks for the phone #

  23. strawberry Says:

    Hi Pearls,
I checked everything that U shared here. It’s so great! Especially Ur C-X experienced, just similar like mine. I delivered my daughter by C-X on 08/08/2005.
My daughter will be 3 years old in less than 2 months & I’m still searching for the right child care/ preschool/ nursery.
BTW, I’m living in Mangaf. I’ve checked some nurseries around Mangaf, but all of them are just some apartments converted to be a nursery & the worse thing is they converted the living room to be a nursery! All activities only in one room….??

I’ll start to work after this summer holiday in Ahmadi from 7am to 3pm.
So, Do U know some child care/ preschool/nursery around Mangaf or Ahmadi? Any suggestion?
    Thanks :)

  34. strawberry Says:

    Om Yousef,
Actually, Danyaal & Baby of Mine Child Care are the same. I sent eMail to Danyaal Child Care, but dunno why Child of Mine who’s replied.
I checked Bud & Blossoms Nursery. The lady is nice & friendly, the cost is cheap
(25KD a month for 6:30am-12pm & 30KD for 6:30am – 3:30pm). The only thing is all activities only in their converted living room to be a nursery.
I think Baby of Mine Child Care is better.

  35. Rima Says:

I’m a working mom need a day care for my Daughter from 8am till 8pm including everything , I want to know the fees for this procedure.Thank you

  36. strawberry Says:

    Rima, where do U live?
Last time Pearls said that Marafie nursery in Salmiya is flexible with everything, they don’t have any restrictions of payment whatsoever, and they offered healthy meals. They open from 6am-8pm
Marafie (Salmiya) costs 85 KD monthly, very flexible with everything, even if you take your kid for one hour or a whole day, it doesn’t matter with them, no restrictions at all, tel: 5613385-5628220-6355349
So, if U live close to Salmiya, Marifie Nursery would be a good choice.

We take children from 1year to 4.5years and are open from 7a.m. to 5p.m. To find out more about us please check out our website http://www.cascade-kuwait.com. 41. Maureen Says:

I have read all of the questions and replies about what parents are looking for in a Nursery and my mind boggles as i read them. I understand that there is sometimes a financial issue, but believe me I have been around and checked out a lot of these Nurseries and I cannot understand why they are actually allowed to still be opened. I have a Nursery in Egaila, Twinkle Star and I can assure you the children in our Nursery are very well taken care of as if they were my own children, we don’t supply there food, and the reason for that is every child has there own taste in food, so i think it would be very difficult to feed the same thing to every child Although they do get fresh fruit evey day.

  42. Maureen Says:

I have been teaching for over 20 years and I have seen a lot, I have 5 children of my own and a grandson, so I know what goes on in schools and Nurseries, that is the reason why myself and my partner opened our own nursery, so that we could give lots of love, care and attention to the children that arrive at our Nursery, so please parents think about where you are placing your children, check out staff, how many staff per age group. What activities are available. what is the timetable for Nursery and Kindergaten. Don’t believe all you here or see. Go into the place unanounced to see whats going on as i’m sure sometimes you would be very surprised.

  43. Orchid Says:

  62. Alison Says:

    Hello,

I am the founder of Happy Chappies Montessori in Fintas. I have lived in Kuwait 15 years so I know how hard it is to find a real Nursery. By this I mean a Nursery that is safe, clean, has a licence and actually teaches the children in their care with qualified teachers and plenty of educational resources, as apposed to a set up that has a licence, colourful toys and jigsaws and ladies not properly or even highly qualified, looking after your children.
I opened in 2005 and have had all the big schools (BSK, TES, NES), amongst others, coming to visit us and ask how and why our children are so ahead of other children who join them. What your children learn in their early years is vital for their future, we provide this foundation and our children love learning, we dont push them, we just provide and answer their questions. We respect our children as individuals and do not treat them as one group in the class, this way they learn as much as they as individuals can, and boy do we as teachers have fun as well!!.
Everybody is welcome to visit us, we have an open door policy and we are happy to show you around. Have a look at what we offer the children on their shelves, you will be amazed. All our equipment is from the U.K and U.S.A, we are a not for profit Nursery, this means that our children get the very best of resources and will continue to do so.
Please call us on 67795678, or visit our website on http://www.happy-chappies.com.
A tip to mums, When you visit a school, look beyond the colour and playtoys…look on the shelves that children can reach!!, what is your child able to pick up and learn for himself, (other than what the teacher tells him). If it is only more jigsaws, books and items you have at home or can buy in Ikea, your child is not learning anything more than social skills and how to share toys.
    Alison.

  73. RosieLee Says:

Just to let everyone know, I checked out ‘The BRITISH Playhouse’ in Mangaf. Let’s just say, it’s not so British.
One lady, the owner I believe is NOT British, she is Irani, and the other girl seems to be austrailian or a new zealanders. The other girl is young and a kuwaiti that doesn’t seem to know what she is doing.

  74. Um Hawra Says:

The British Playhouse is opening in september 2008 . it’s in Mangaf ,
all staff are british , call them and go have a look at it belive me you will love it , i think they are going to have mum’s and todds soo soon
    call:4411783
    or 6053941

I think the teachers are from New Zealand and Iran as far as I know.

  75. Sandy Says:

I am amazed that people claim their staff are ‘British’ and qualified and think that by putting the work English or British in the name of their establishment they are fooling anyone.

  76. Shaima Says:

YES the owner is Irani and the teachers are all qualified. One of the teachers is from New Zealand and the other is from England. as for the assistants, one of them is Kuwaiti and she knows what she is doing, and the other one is from England. It is called the British playhouse because they follow the British cirriculum. If anyone has a problem with this nursery I am sure they would be happy to help with any questions or listen to any comments you may have reguarding these issues.

  77. Sandy Says:

” It is called the British playhouse because they follow the British cirriculum”

    cUrriculum.
    regUarding.

What curriculum is this ? What are the subjects taught? What schemes of work and objectives are you following? Which textbooks? Which strategy?
Are you following the objectives stipulated in Article 77 of the School Education Law?

LOL- another cowboy outfit Pearls. ”Oh let’s open a nursery! Let’s paint it yelow and get a couple of teachers and some toys from IKEa. We’ll make a bomb.”
    You know the spiel.

  78. Amani Says:

    hello everyone :)

quite frankly, my child is at the British Playhouse Nursery, and im satisfied with the results that i see in her. she is more stable behaviour wise, more social, and above all that she is learning so much! she loves going to school because of the wonderful learning environtment that the school offers. all boils down to the effort of the teachers and owner. The only struggle i face comes towards the end of the day when i have to pull her out of the jungle gym lol

not in an offensive way, but i had to pull my daughter out of a previous nursery cause i wasn’t pleased with the teachers. even though they were all british.

it’s hard to really tell that a person or teacher is not qualified from a single or even more than one visit. a correct judgement would be based on the results seen in ur children. so nothing wrong with checking that out. if you don’t like it, the owner is nice enough to have a money back policy. she only keeps the registration fee, and not the fee for the course itself, which from my point of view is fair.

i think that the comment about the nationality of the teachers and owner was quite racist. NOTE: the term british when used for a school or nursery here means that they follow the british curriculum. it does not in any way mean that they have british teachers.

One of the biggest and most well known, even oldest nursery in kuwait has employed foreign and arab teachers from all over that do the job just as well.

i have been to the best schools, and nurseries in kuwait as child. And the quality of education and atmosphere offered by the British Playhouse Nursery is just as good. The owner herself has been in one of the most prestigious schools in kuwait. So she knows what she’s offering and what standards to aim at.

also i’d like to add, that we are in an arab country, and i myself am kuwaiti. we do have the priority of getting whatever job it is in our own country, and you’re bound to find atleast one kuwaiti working in any firm, company or school due to the govt. rules here. so that is not really something to comment about, yet say lose some sleep over it.

with all due respect, just because some ppl carry the british nationality does not make them qualified. The teacher from newzealand there seemed nicer and easier to cooperate and communicate with than the british teacher that was previously there. and all the parents that i met through the mums and tods event at the british playhouse nursery seemed to agree.

please note that my comment is not an attack towards the british. i have worked with, been taught by most times, and lived with the british, so they do have my all my respect. it was purely a reply to express my disgust in relation to the comment that a few ppl left here about the races of ppl working at the nursery and not the nursery itself.

at the end of the day, each person is entitled to their own opinion regarding certain issues. but, they do have to expect a reply or comment about what they say. take it or leave it :)

    Best regards,

    Amani Al Rashed.

[...] Pearls- who commented on my post, has a really insightful post on her own blog about the issue. There are several comments which follow, and boy are tensions getting a bit high towards the end. http://calmness.net/2007/09/02/finding-nurseries/#comment-21061 [...]

  80. RosieLee Says:

    CURRICULUM……

    REGARDING habeebty.

    Christ.

  81. Sandy Says:

    RegUard……lol
Maybe it’s a guard that becomes a guard again?

So is this Shaima one of the teachers? Hope she isn’t teaching spelling or phonics lol

  82. Danah Says:

    hey girls.

i think that most of the comments towards the end here defy the purpose of the blog.

if you have a negative comment about a certain nursery, it should still be expressed gracefully, without attacking anyone for example the owner and her staff on what seems to be a personal level……..

everyone makes spelling mistakes. but if you got the comment, then thats what counts.

    chill girls.

  83. Shaima Says:

i’m actually the owner. and how did u know that i was Iranian? i wasn’t wearing a badge or anything lol

are typing errors that much of a big deal? did you get the point behind what i was saying? cause that’s what counts.

anyways, i appreciate your concern for the children and the quality of education i have to offer. i’m sure you got everyone curious enough to come and have a look for themselves.

    thankyou.

    Shaima Namavar.

  84. Sandy Says:

So where does the ”British” come in? In your ‘school’ I mean.

  85. Sandy Says:

Oh I am still curious about which units of the National Curriculum you follow. Could you tell me- I have twins that I am interested in placing from January onwards. We live in Ahmadi but I would travel, to the right place.

  86. Shaima Says:

it’s comes from following the british curriculum as i stated earlier.

  87. Shaima Says:

i’d be pleased if you come and visit, and we’ll further discuss this face to face. and bring your twins. :)

But sandy what i dont understand is how you can criticise my staff and i if u’ve never visited the nursery before.

  88. Sandy Says:

Yes but you won’t enlighten us on WHICH parts of the UK there is no British) Curriculum you follow- which units? which objectives?
I’m afraid I am not believing much here.

  89. Shaima Says:

i never asked you to believe here. but like i said. pass by sunday. it’ll give you more to talk about :)

  90. Sandy Says:

Alright I’ll make it easier for you:

Teacher X is British from ______________
Teacher Y is British from ______________

We are following the national curriculum KS1
    History Units ____ and ____
    Geography units ____ and ______
    Science units _____ and ______
    ICT units ______ and ______

Does that help? I shouldn’t have to ‘visit’. You, as the owner, making claims, should be able to provide me with this information now.

  91. Shaima Says:

i’m glad you got that right. :) as the owner i refuse to disclose detailed information like that without the parent visiting. i’d like to make sure that my parents have an overall view and opinion towards what i have to offer sandy.

  92. Sandy Says:

    HAHAHAHAH

You have just committed the cardinal sin in business, you answered to many questions evasively and now there is no need for anyone to visit…..they know it all, already.

  93. Shaima Says:

Well Sandy, that’s ur opinion. you’re entitled to it. i’m sure that there are others who would disagree.

    Thank you anyways. :)

  94. Sandy Says:

No I’m sure that those who know anything about education Shaima would recognize that you don’t actually have a curriculum- you may be tteaching in the British ‘style’ but that is probably about it.
Your unwillingness to state wheer your staff come from, your inability to cite curriculum units and your verbosity all indicate, bullshit.

  95. RosieLee Says:

Sandy made a few good points there. Would be interesting if the nursery owners here could state exactly what they cover?
I’m looking for a nursery for my youngest daughter. She is 18 months. I don’t really want to send her full days, only half.. and perhaps, just twice a week.
Do any of these nurseries offer meals? I’m not talking about noodles and soup..
    I mean healthy balanced meals.

  96. Um Badoora Says:

Pearls wich nursery you send your kid too now? is good?
shaima what facilities do you offer? and where is it?

  97. Sandy Says:

Looks like Shailma has gone all quiet and is off swotting up on Curriculum……..

  98. Shaima Says:

are we going to conclude this anytime soon? cause i won’t say anything more apart from what i said earlier.

but i’ll repeat it for ur sake. Thank you Sandy for voicing out ur opinion :)

  99. Sandy Says:

OK I will fill in the missing gaps:

Alright I’ll make it easier for you:

Teacher X is British from ___New Zealand ( was it once British Empire)___________

Teacher Y is British from __Kuwait ( again once British Empire____________

We are following the national curriculum KS1

    History Units ____ and ____ ( not applcable )
    Geography units ____ and ______ ( not applicable )
    Science units _____ and ______ ( not applicable )
    ICT units ______ and ______ ( not applicable )

    Silence is golden Shailma

  100. Shaima Says:

i’d only like to add one more thing thats related to the nationalities of my staff.

You mentioned my teachers from newzealand and kuwait, but failed to mention anything regarding the british teacher that i had and terminated due to various reasons and complaints. all the comments from my point of view are due to the termination of that teacher.

About your children, i’m sure u’ll find something suitable to ur liking and standards other than my place.

Another goal behind my diversity of staff, is for the children to be exposed to people of different cultures and morals alike.

    Thank you once again Sandy.

  101. Sandy Says:

    Still no curriculum info eh?
    LOL
Or just no curriculum period ?

  102. Rachael Says:

Well, well, well! Now, i feel i would like to contribute to this ‘slagging off’ exercise. If, Sandy is so au fait with the British Curriculum, one would think she would know that the children a nursery caters for, falls under the Foundation stage and NOT Key Stage 1. If one wants to publicly announce their abhorrence to a particular business, service, institute or otherwise, then one shouldn’t waste their precious time dealing with them. For the record, I dont like Honda cars, so I dont drive one. Enjoy the weekend and download a copy of the latest National Curriculum if you have time.

  103. Sandy Says:

    Latest post from Shaima:
”You mentioned my teachers from newzealand and kuwait, but failed to mention anything regarding the british teacher that i had and terminated due to ”

    Previous post from Shaima :
”One of the teachers is from New Zealand and the other is from England. as for the assistants, one of them is Kuwaiti ”

    Earliest post from Shaima:
”The British Playhouse is opening in september 2008 . it’s in Mangaf ,
    all staff are british ”

    So which is it Shaima?
    one british?
    ALL British?
    One Kuwait?
The Kuwaiti is the assistant or the teacher?

    We are all intrigued now.

  104. Shaima Says:

Good, maybe that’ll be a push for you to come and see my nursery for urself.

our curriculum is ADAPTED to suit the needs of the children Sandy.

most of the children are ESL so the curriculum sits there. We follow the standards as written in the Foundation Stage of the British Curriculum… not Key Stage 1. just thought u should know since ure all au fait about it.

can you name one school or nursery where all the staff is national to the country the school promotes as being?

according to the Labour law in kuwait, there has to be atleast one kuwaiti employed in any private firm. It is their country afterall :)

  105. Natalie Says:

As a teacher and a mother with a daughter who is extremely happy and settled in Cascade British Nursery, I thought I might just jump in here and have a say on the topic of teachers and nurseries here in Kuwait…
We all know that a majority of nurseries, schools, universities, etc here do not hit or even come close to hitting the standards of the curriculum – whether British, American, etc. but we as parents are always looking for the bext education for our children.

At all these schools running the ‘British curriculum’ they are not stating ‘British teachers teaching the British Curriculum’ – are they?
A teacher whether British, New Zealander, American should be judged on their standards as teachers. This is definitely more important and paramount in comparison to their particular nationality. Are you stating that only a British national can effectively deliver the British National Curriculum of England and Wales??? I would like to debate that any day of the week… If a teacher is well qualified and trained they should be able to adapt to any curriculum and teach it as well as a national of that country.

This nursery you are talking about – British Playhouse – is a new nursery in Mangaf. I have personally met the owner and some of the teachers at this school. It is new, innovative, clean, productive and as far as I know, delivering the British Foundation Stage curriculum. In addition to this, I believe they are also catering to the diversity of second language pupils.

I would like to know which units you are talking about? History? Geography? I believe you have the KS1 curriculum mixed up with the Foundation Stage. I have yet to locate where in the Foundation Stage these ‘units’, ‘textbooks’ come into play…maybe you would like to send me through the link.

This all seems like a vendetta against this nursery or the owner…who made you the Witchhunter???? Is it ‘Sandy’???? Have I got that, right?? Get a life!!!!!

  106. RosieLee Says:

    So, for clarity….not to dispute.
the british playhouse follow a foundation stage british curriculum but no british staff?
sorry im not a teacher exactly what does the foundation stage cover?
natalie, i have heard good reports on cascade, do you have a number for them? where is their locality? do they offer meals? It would be convenient for me if there was somewhere that offered this facility

  107. RosieLee Says:

is it The British Play House or The British Playhouse?
I tried the search engine google but cannot locate it, can someone send me a link for this one and cascade?

  108. Sandy Says:

”We follow the standards as written in the Foundation Stage of the British Curriculum… not Key Stage 1. just thought u should know since ure all au fait about it.”

Well Shaima if you had said that earlier it could have saved us all a lot of bother, couldn’t it? Or have you just discovered the Foundation Stage?

Talk to me about EYFS or FSP PSA1 Targets- then I’ll believe you know what you are talking about.

re ”British staff ” ( Natalie, Shaima ), actually Shaima YOU were the one who said that and I just queried it. Why claim all british in one post and then later say , no, mixed. When did ALL become SOME ?

Natalie – re UNITS ( ”I have yet to locate where in the Foundation Stage these ‘units’, ‘textbooks’ come into play…maybe you would like to send me through the link”

What I REALLY wanted you to say Shaima, what would REALLY have made me believe you, would be if you had said :
”We follow the guidelines of the UK National Curriculum and frameworks for the Foundation Stage”………………….

  110. Sandy Says:

…..because there IS NO KG CURRICULUM……just suggested guidelines, topics and attainment targets……………………

  113. Noura Says:

    Hey guys!

I just wanna say…I had very bad experiences at The English Playgroup, I wont say what, but let’s just say don’t judge a book by its cover…it looks great but on the inside…TERRIBLE!

My son just turned 3, I enrolled him at The Sunshine Kindergarten, which is the Preschool and KG Department of The British School of Kuwait. They have Creche, which is a Nursery, I’m not sure what ages they take but I’m pretty sure they take them at infant stage onwards, then they have Pre-KG which is from 2 and a half up to 4 I think and then it’s KG.

What I love about the Sunshine Kindergarten is that it’s a part of an actual School, not just a Nursery- nurseries in Kuwait don’t fall under The Ministry of Education so everything is sort of unofficial. Another thing is that the buidling is brand new, they just finished building it last summer (June 2008) and the facilities are amazing. They keep you up to date with the children’s activities on a daily basis, and my son is absolutely loving it. The staff are very professional and all qualified, and the even have after-school activities so for the moms who need more time to make it from work, you can enroll ur child in an after school club til u get there!

Although my daughter goes to Kuwait English School, and is in Reception now, I decided to put my son at the pre-KG program at The SUnshine Kindergarten since KES doesn’t have a Pre-KG program. It worked out superb!

The school hours are from 7:30-12:30.

The school is located in Salwa, Area 1 st 1.

  114. Claire Says:

    Hi,

Reading all the above is enough to put you off sending your child to a Nursery in Kuwait!!, luckily enough I found Happy Chappies Montessori Nursery in Fintas, it is covered by the Ministry of Education and Social affaires who happened to mention it was one of the best they have seen in 30 years, the owner doesnt advertize that little fact but I found out from the lady who built their website. Many schools have copied them and the owner encourages other schools to come see them and learn what they do because she feels that every child is entitled to a great education.
I like this fact, my child has learnt so much and its so good to see a school that opens their doors with the interest of children truly at the heart of their operation.
Have a look at their website, http://www.happy-chappies.com.
They have little ones from ages 11 months till 4 and a half. The Principal Nikki is fantastic, highly qualified herself, and the owner Alison is a truly wonderful lady, she mixes with parents and children and you would never know she was the owner, she treats each and everybody the same and you can see why everybody loves the school and the teachers. Everybody follows the same code and i wish i could work there!!, at least my 2 year old daughter is benefiting. I cant recommend this Nursery enough.

  115. marian Says:

i have been reading the ongoing blogg about the britishplayhouse with interest and would like to inform you that the teacher did in fact resign and was no way or no how terminated .
so lets just cut that train of thought out RIGHT NOW

  116. princess Says:

You guys make me worried sending my baby anywhere when he is old enough. I am thinking of home-schooling.

  117. Noura Says:

princess: dont be worried there’s a difference between nurseries and actual schools :) Generally the well known schools here in Kuwait are pretty good….just depends what system u wanna enrolls ur child in..British, American, or Bilingual.

Some of the good schools in Kuwait are: American School of Kuwait, Bayan Bilingual School, New English School, Kuwait English School….there are much more ofcourse.

The only places you shouldn’t consider are the newer schools because they still have to establish themselves and prove their good quality!

    Hope that helps :)

  118. anne Says:

    Hello everybody,

Can anybody recommend a good bilingual or arabic montessori nursery?
I visited the Happy Chappies and the Learning Steps and I liked them both but I was wondering whether there are any arabic/bilingual nurseries which are as good.

  119. Sandy Says:

    Interesting Marian…..

Yes Happy Chappies sounds by far one of the best ones in the Fintas Mangaf area- they are popping up three a penny down there but at least HC’s has Ministry blessing and such.

  120. Heba Says:

    hi everyone,
my daughter is 8 months old and im looking for a suitable nursery as i will be returning to work soon.
Please can anyone advise me about a good nursery, preferably in jabriya or south surra.
    Thanx alot :)

  121. princess Says:

Thanks Noura for your suggestions. I have heard good thing about Happy Chappies and Learning Steps. My neighbour just told me Happy Chappies is very crowded but well equipped. I have looked at their websites and and found them very imformative, but I liked the teacher child ratio at Learning Steps much better . I think I will pay a visit to both of them. My son hears both languages so it doesnt matter if the nursery language is only english.

  122. bree Says:

Pearls, you have a great blog!! I came across it, while searching for a montessori teacher in kuwait. I am still searching for her and some of the bloggers might know her. Her name is Sofi and I think she is from Bulgaria or Hungary or Romania and married to a Kuwaiti. I have met her two years ago in a playground and got some really good advise from her regarding my sons tantrums. Does anybody knows which school she is working in? Desparate!!

  123. anne Says:

    Hi Bree,

Zsofia runs the Learning Steps nursery: http://www.learning-steps.com/

  124. Pearls Says:

I’m so happy that this post helped a lot of mothers out there :)

  125. Claire Says:

    Hi,

My little one goes to Happy Chappies and yes its really great. I dont think its crowded at all?, they have a maximum of 15-24 children in a class with 3-4 members of staff per class and you should see the classrooms!!, they are really spacious.
I just read a review on them, its on ”Kuwait living” on the internet…i have copy/paste it for you guys…

    School Reviews

The other day I had the pleasure to visit the Happy Chappies nursery school. If I say that it was amazing and wonderful that would be an understatement. I was extremely impressed with the place, the system, and especially the people. From the management to the classroom teachers, and even the guard! Everyone was warm, friendly, and, above all, professional.

Seeing the children entrenched in various learning activities was a joy, because it was clear that every child there was truly happy, enjoying the experience, and growing as an individual because of it. This is a sight that a mother loves to see. Surrounding each and every classroom are literally hundreds of activities arranged in a clean, tidy, organized manner, each one based on some sort of learning activity, from academics to life skills.

The Happy Chappies nursery school is a Montessori based school with a few adaptations taken from educational theory, giving this school an edge that I haven’t seen before in Kuwait. The director of the Happy Chappies nursery, Alison Verdonk, says that she had a dream to provide children with an extraordinary learning experience, and I know she has certainly done it!

Kuwait Living highly recommends Happy Chappies nursery to all mothers of young children, for the learning experience of a lifetime. If you want your child to be prepared for his or her school years, this is the place for them to be! So, it’s definitely FIVE STARS!!!

Check out their website for more information! http://www.happy-chappies.com

Me again, the other schools in Fintas are all new so naturally there are less children..Happy Chappies has been open from 2005,
Hope this helps a few mums out there.

  126. Claire Says:

    Hi,

Yes Sofi is running The Learning Steps Nursery, she a nice lady, she was working at Happy Chappies before and left to start her own place this year. If you like Happy Chappies you will like hers im sure as she will have taken some of their ideas to build her Nursery, she and Alison who owns Happy Chappies are good friends.

    hi,

I am looking for a good play school for my daughter who is around 2 years and 8 months old. I am living in Mangaf. I have been recommended for 2 schools by my friends. Happy Chappy and Twinkle Star.

Can somebody forward me the website of Twinkle Star. I have been to Happy Chappy site and seems to be quite satisified.

I also want to look at Twinkle Star site. Appreciate your help.

  129. princess Says:

    Hi Bela,
Twinkle Star does not have one ,but it is worth a look if you are looking for a ‘play’ group.
Learning Steps is a good one too. http://www.learning-steps.com/
I recomment to you to visit the nurseries not only the websites before you make a decision.
Hope it helps in your search.

loool. hi noor … loooong time wallah :) How’s everything? Mabrook on giving birth, mashallah! That’s so nice to hear, you’re finally a mother :)

I know what you’re going through, it’s not easy finding the right nursery for your kid here esp. if she’s under 2yrs. My son goes to Happyland Funskool in Salwa. Their number is 25624956 but they don’t accept kids under 2yrs, check with them first to make sure though.

I’ll e-mail you my number, let’s meet up sometime …

    Hello there
I am here to ask if anyone knows of any nurseries near the Jahra area who are offering to train new staff.
My daughter will be finishing school this year, she is struggling with a couple of the subjects in the science field. It is her dream to actually work with small children. If she fails this year I was wondering if anyone can employ her as assistant or something and give her training at the same time where she could obtain some form of ‘shahada’ at the end which will enable her to seek employment elsewhere or to continue in the same place. I know that everyone here is talking about their small children, but I just thought that maybe some of the owners here could give me some advice. Btw, my daughter speaks english and arabic,(Iam from Uk and her father is kuwiati. Thanks for any help that you can give me.

  141. Mayssa Says:

I am in Kuwait since two years now and have a 2 year old son and 10 months old daughter. I have left my job and home schooling them because I didn’t get to hear anything good about nurseries here in Kuwait. Either they are appartments covered into nurseries purely for monetary gains or way to expensive for average people to afford. In the end its all the same. No one is actually working for kids its all money making business. I am worried for my kids mental growth and limited exposure they are getting in this country. Everything is so artificial. Its a sad sad situation :(

  144. Nice Says:

    Hey,
Well here everyone is talking about their childrens and problems,as i’m looking for a job,if any one can suggest me about Nurseries and Pre-School.As i donn’t know much Nurseries in kuwait. If any vacancies there.
As i worked and got 4 years experience in a School.I teach the KG’s and Nursery students. If any one can help me telling regarding the Nurseries.
As i worked in a school, but now i wana work in a nursery, want to play and let them study (small childrens) :)
Is there any problem regarding Nationalities???
As i’m not Kuwaiti.I can speak well Arabic and English.
As i think i can understand the small childrens and their activities.
    Thanks
