No more Baby-Walkers!

baby walker.JPG

I’ve read so much about the risks of baby-walkers but I haven’t really given it much of a thought when I borrowed my sister-in-law’s walker. I used to allow 15 minutes of supervised play on the baby-walker when I’m not around.

Now, I’m considering not using it at all especially after what I heard yesterday about a 6 month old baby on one of those baby-walkers, and while his babysitter was busy doing something when all of a sudden the baby falls 7 steps down the stairs! OUCH!

So yesterday I gave some new instructions that my baby won’t be using the baby-walker anymore when I’m not around at all. I admit though they’re very cute but nothing can compete with their dangers.

I also read that baby-walkers don’t really help much with walking at all because walking needs a totally different maneuver. It also delays crawling, walking, and standing up (BMJ).  But the American Academy of Pediatric and other associations have already proposed a ban on using baby- walkers. The Canadian government prohibited new and used baby-walkers from being advertised, sold or imported. I hope Kuwait would do that one sweet day!

Nothing beats the parent gently holding the baby’s hands over the baby’s head as the baby tries to walk! The parent is there to watch and help out as the baby puts in his exercise!

Do you know where I can find safer baby activity centers?

I let both of my children use walkers - only when I was around and never around stairs. My son was delayed in walking but whether or not that was due to his love for the walker, I don’t know.

When I was about 1, my mother came home and found a huge lump on my head. The maid told her that I had fallen from my walker onto the floor the day before. It turned out that I had a fractured skull. Whether or not it was a walker, who knows?

Also - at Centrepoint, they have those stationary play centers, where the child can sit and twirl but cannot move it around. I have one for my baby and she loved it for a few months but soon got tired of it. I still have it and use it for times when I need to take a shower or something and don’t want her walking all over the room.

    UGLY fall!

How much does it cost, and is it 100% safe?

Windwalker, inshallah you will. Btw, Layla’s such a cute name.

I can’t remember but I think it was somewhere around KD15 and it’s completely safe. All they can do is twist around and the coolest thing about it is that when they get older, you can take it apart and it becomes a race track for toy cars.

Very interesting…first time I hear about that! My daughter used the walker and she never crawled…she went straight to walking! Maybe this is why..

    Thanks Stinni for the info.

OB, there are other reasons too. If your baby doesn’t spend enough time on her tummy then some babies might skip crawling entirely. I read that babies should spend at least 10-15 minutes a day on their tummies because that’s the only way they can strengthen their muscles.
